Over a period of three days, eight alternative art initiatives or off-spaces in Gent, will host a collaborative art event. Exhibitions, manifestations, performances and lectures will take place both in the different locations and in the public space. NOW. YOU ARE HERE highlights the importance of the off-space as a vital ingredient for the dynamics of the local cultural field.
With a minimum of resources, a new light is shed on the urban identity of Gent and the vast amount of future possibilities the city incorporates. The spaces and projects, adding value to the cultural life of the city, are born from the tremendous commitment and enthusiasm both the organizations and the participating artists have shown over the past months and years.
NOW. YOU ARE HERE is proposing a thorough contemporaneity and anti-conservatism - the basic values that hold together the frame wherein the alternative art spaces operate. It points out an existential understanding of temporality and uncertainty that the greater part of the organizations is facing. While organizing the event, De Frigo shut its doors and in the case of Zwart Wild, it will be the last opportunity to make use of their current location.
In an attempt to manifest a collective gesture in the city and increase the visibility of the off-spaces, NOW. YOU ARE HERE is conceived as a collaborative effort between likeminded initiatives without losing track of their individual integrity.
These Things Take Time invites Ben Benaouisse and Sil Krol to do an intervention in public space. These artistic actions will be framed further in TTTT. During the event, TTTT will be the info point and open the event on Thursday, the 25th of September.
By means of an open call, Room XIII invites artists to create a work on a frame of 550 X 220, a reference to the physical space of Room XIII. These frames are scattered in different locations in the city, confronting passers-by with the concept of the off-space. Frames created by Elien Ronse, Tommy Desmet, Georgia Kokot, Klaas Vanhee, Laura Ten Zeldam, Mischa Doorenweerd (NL) and Christine Roggeman are shown during NOW. YOU ARE HERE.
Kuiperskaai organizes an exhibition at Art Cinema OFFoff; a first edition of Moving House that proposes an open residence, in collaboration with diverse organizations and disciplines. In OFFoff a selection of old and new works are presented.
NVT Gallery shows the work of John Amouts and Jonas Vanderbeke, as well as a light installation by Tom Dekyver, mediating the whole presentation.
Taking the “property condition report" as its point of departure, the exhibition and symposium, organized by Zwart Wild, address the different perspectives and intentions when responding to a particular space. The exhibition will take place in conjunction with a symposium on the 27th of September. The event will take off with a presentation of ‘Rabot 4-358’ by Simon Allemeersch. Next Wiebe Moerman, Bart Lodewijks and Peter Fengler (NL) will take the floor. Participating artists in the exhibition are Bart Lodewijks (NL), Oshin Albrecht & Melissa Mabesoone, Zeli Bauwens, Sofie Van der Linden, Flurin Bisig (CH), Neel De Bruycker, Sander Van Raemdonck, Jura Shust (BY).
During the whole span of the event, Stroom.tv, will take the form of a virtual exhibition space, with interventions by various artists exploring the theme of infinity, the virtual landscape with no frontiers. Live music and shows combined with visuals, soundscapes, documentaries and a selection of shows from the archive space visual arts are on the program. Including artists, among others, are andere Siet Raeymackers, Inwolves & Different Fountains.
On Sunday SECONDroom presents a book produced in collaboration with Topo Copy. The publication bundles the exhibitions of the last season.
Also on Sunday, 019 will bring music and video works by Phill Niblock and Guy De Bievre.

Acht Gentse alternatieve kunstruimtes, ‘off-spaces’, organiseren een kunst driedaagse. Gedurende drie dagen vinden er zowel in de verschillende ruimtes als in de publieke ruimte exposities, manifestaties, performances en lezingen plaats. Met NOW. YOU ARE HERE wordt, vanuit de artistieke humuslaag die de stad rijk is, het belang van ‘off-spaces’ voor de vitaliteit van het culturele weefsel benadrukt.
Met een minimum aan middelen wordt betekenis gegeven aan de urbane identiteit van Gent, de toekomst beschouwd als een open veld aan mogelijkheden. De ruimtes en de projecten die ze organiseren komen voort uit een tomeloze inzet en gedrevenheid van zowel de organisaties als de participerende kunstenaars en geven zo een meerwaarde aan het culturele gebeuren van de stad.
NOW. YOU ARE HERE slaat op een doorgedreven contemporaniteit, een anticonservatisme waarmee de verschillende ruimtes hun werking uitdragen. Het benoemt een haast existentieel besef van tijdelijkheid of onzekerheid waarmee het merendeel van de ruimtes geconfronteerd wordt. Zo is tijdens het organiseren van dit evenement ‘De Frigo’ opgedoekt en voor ‘Zwart Wild’ zal dit het laatste evenement zijn op hun huidige locatie.
Now. You are here is een samenwerking tussen de verschillende ‘off-spaces’ in een poging een gezamenlijk gebaar te maken in de stad en tegelijkertijd de zichtbaarheid van de individuele ruimtes te vergroten.
•These Things Take Time nodigt Ben Benouisse en Sil Krol uit voor een interventie in de publieke ruimte. De acties van deze kunstenaars worden verder omkaderd in TTTT. TTTT is tijdens het evenement tevens het infopunt voor Now. You are here, en zal op donderdag 25 september het evenement openen.
•Kamer XIII nodigt via een open call kunstenaars uit om een voorstel in te dienen voor een werk op een frame van 550 X 220, een referentie naar de fysieke ruimte van Kamer XIII. Deze frames worden op verschillende locaties in de stad verspreid en confronteren de stadsbewoner met het gegeven van een off space. Een ‘frame’ van: Elien Ronse, Tommy Desmet, Georgia Kokot, Klaas Vanhee, Laura Ten Zeldam, Mischa Doorenweerd (NL) en Christine Roggeman wordt getoond tijdens Now. You are here.
•Kuiperskaai organiseert een tentoonstelling in Art Cinema OFFoff; een eerste editie van Moving House waar vanuit de samenwerking met verschillende organisaties en disciplines een open residentie wordt voorgesteld. In OFFoff wordt een selectie van oud en nieuw werk getoond.
•NVT Galerie toont het werk van Johannes Amouts en Jonas Vanderbeke en een lichtinstallatie van Tom Dekyver die het geheel ontsluit.
•Zwart Wild • organiseert een tentoonstelling en symposium. Het geheel vertrekt vanuit de idee van een ‘plaatsbeschrijving’ en toont de verschillende intenties van waaruit er met een plek wordt omgegaan. Inhoudelijk wordt de tentoonstelling gekaderd met een symposium dat plaatsvindt op 27/09 en wordt ingeleid met de voorstelling‘Rabot 4-358’ door Simon Allemeersch. Vervolgens nemen Wiebe Moerman, Bart Lodewijks en Peter Fengler (NL) het woord of het podium. Deelnemende kunstenaars aan de tentoonstelling zijn: Bart Lodewijks (NL), Oshin Albrecht & Melissa Mabesoone, Zeli Bauwens, Sofie Van der Linden, Flurin Bisig (CH), Neel De Bruycker, Sander Van Raemdonck, Jura Shust (BY).
•Stroom.tv fungeert gedurende de vier dagen als virtuele tentoonstellingsruimte met interventies van verschillende kunstenaars. Het uitgangspunt hier is oneindigheid, het virtuele landschap zonder grenzen. Live muziek, live shows in combinatie met visuals, soundscapes, documentaires en een selectie van shows uit het archief over ruimte beeldende kunst staan op het programma. Met onder andere Siet Raeymackers, Inwolves & Different Fountains.
•In 019 is er op zondag 28 september muziek en video van Phill Niblock en Guy De Bievre.
•SECONDroom presenteert op zondag een boek dat in samenwerking met Topo Copy gemaakt is en die de exposities van het vorige seizoen bundelen.
